Nick Cave’s Grinderman with Heathen Child

Nick Cave has a twisted vision, and one that consequently I love. Mellon-collie, macabre and dark.

Despite forming Grinderman back in 2006 along with Warren Ellis, Martyn P. Casey and Jim Sclavunos, all of whom are members of the post-punk group Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds I missed the memo. Thankfully their début album (released in 2007) is available on Spotify, so I can play catch up. You can also check out the new single Heathen Child via the streaming service of which this video is taken from.

grinderman Nick Caves Grinderman with Heathen Child

It’s a wonderfully camp video which reminds me of the 80s classic Flash Gordon and other lovably naff sci-fi fantasy. If you had been pondering what Nick Cave might look like as a Roman Centurion, then ponder no more as your, somewhat unique, dream is realised.

The video was directed by John Hilcoat. The album Grinderman 2, from which this single is taken comes out next week, 13th September.

graphic design: Sub Slayers Mix [02] CD & Front

One of my regular clients at the moment is the record label Sub Slayers (yes they still do vinyl). I’m hired as digital manager and brand guardian. Label head Jay Cunning put together an all out heavy breaks mix showcasing the label, the signed artists and the sound it’s pushing (scroll down for a free download of the mix). Several hundred CDs were produced to be given away at gigs and artwork was needed.

This is that artwork, produced by yours truly.

web design: Sub Slayers mailer no.4

Recently completed this design for the record label: Sub Slayers. Bit of an update on the previous design, as we move away from the hazard lines, yet retaining the colour scheme. You can view the live version of this emailer newsletter here.

artwork: Downbeaten Exploratory Interests

So after 2 years since the 2nd volume was produced I’ve finally managed to come out with a 3rd downtempo/ambient audio mix under my DVNT alias. Photography and sleeve design for this (and the attached earlier 2 volumes) are by myself.

video: Sanchtv – Mutation

Sanchtv is one of the best coders/visualists working with the opensource and free software VVVV. Believe it or not the following video is a realtime render of sanch at his finest. The London producer, Jude Greenaway aka Scanone provides the sound design and together with the beauty of the visual, gives us a stunning video.

This a pretty recent video from sanch, and it’s entitled Mutation.

makemassair the showreel, 05/2010

No surprises what this post is about. Here I present a short 6minute showreel comprising of some the recent freelance work I’ve produced.

first up is the client, Daygame.

I’ve been bought in by Daygame owner Andy Yosha to edit the footage he and his crew film of their training. I also provide post production work with colour correction and grading, as well as some sound correction work from their location shooting. I then transcode the footage to it’s final destination which currently is web distribution with the video sharing sites, Vimeo and Youtube.

the record label Sub Slayers

At the time of writing this post, this particular 3minute music promotional video is unpublished. In addition to creating the digital artwork (as seen on the right hand side of the video included) I’ve been working on some styled, yet simple short promotional videos to help promote the label, Sub Slayers, and their releases. Increasingly video is being used to help promote everything these days as more and more people are getting onto Facebook (check out their Root Music page which I designed) and picking up the new gen of media savvy phones, optimised by the iPhone. The videos aren’t just an image of the artwork with fade in/fade out on the audio. They have been developed a little further, with some motion design segments, very much on the less is more tip.

sevenzero, the commissioned AV piece by Tate Britain / “Quiet Voices”

Other than those lucky few who were at the premiere screening back in January of this year at Tate Britain or at the Digital City event in March. I’m still stunned by not only being asked to provide a piece for the event, but also the feedback received from the screening. Everything you see and hear in this 1minute excerpt, the entire piece, was produced by me, from shooting the footage, to the sound design and final look. I’ll be putting up the full 7min piece shortly.

fashion label, Sample Remix

I’ve been working with the fashion label, Sample Remix, for a while now, right from the conception of the logo and initial branding through to the recent redesign of the label website. Included in my showreel here are the teaser trailer for the Acedia fashion collection, as well as 90seconds of footage from the final prequel video that was screened at the Festival of Sins event in October. The performance was designed to be an audiovisual one, that went beyond just being a catwalk collection to more of a performance based piece.

More details, including a recording of that performance can be found here.

excerpt from a VJ performance at Glade Festival 2009.

Last year I was fortunate en0ugh to have performed at Glade Festival in the Brakedown stage over the course of the festival. A longer video from the event can be found here.

there you go

So that’s some of my recent motion work. If you like what you’ve seen, or if you have any comments, do please leave some words in the box below. If you are interested in hiring me for any of your projects, please drop me a line to discuss further.

artwork: MANTIS Radio

Every 2 weeks I produce and host a 2 hour electronica based radio show called MANTIS. Here I present some of the recent web images designed to help promote and archive the shows. Where possible I use photography / imagery from the respectively featured producer, giving it my own flourish with regards to finished colour and look. You’ll notice that the general template style of the information develops slightly from show to show.

I’ve been broadcasting the show since May 2007 and it’s proved to be quite popular with thousands of music lovers the world over. I think this is largely due to the show being available as a podcast, (if you don’t use iTunes, click here for the RSS feed).  That and showcasing some serious talent over the years.

four short clips of Decode: Digital Design Sensations

On April 3rd I finally managed to get myself along to the Decode: Digital Design Sensations exhibition at the V&A Museum in South Kensington, London. The exhibition was closing on the 11th and so it had to happen really.

I took my trusty little flip HD video with me and put together the following video, featuring four short clips from the exhibition.

inspire: recent images from the 7divine tumblr

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while then you might have remembered that a while back I started a Posterous blog with the aim of highlighting interesting and stimulating visual inspiration. Eventually this evolved into a tumblr site. I love the simplicity with which I can display imagery through it.
