Miss Kosmix is the youngest DJ of the London based Malfaiteurs Soundsystem. At the age of just 23 she has played around London and abroad alongside the likes of the finest harder techno DJs out there. Such as Jeff Amadeus, Aaron Liberator, Chris Liberator, Julian Liberator, The Geezer, Rackitt, D.A.V.E. the Drummer, Gizelle, Pattrix, DJ K.N, DJ Staw, Olivier FX, Jerome Hill, Zebedee, Miss Daisy, Lusinda, Sterling Moss, Product 19, DJ Adrenalin, Syber Symon, Carl Hendricks, and DJ Oji.

In early 2007 she earned herself a residency with London’s longest running Techno night: Nuclear Free Zone, which has been going for some 16 years at Club 414 in Brixton.

Her motto goes a little something like this: ‘there are no problems only solutions, so keep on avin’ it!’

If you liked our 21st showcase from the Concrete DJz and their relentless barrage of techno then you’re going to love this.

REST OF THE SHOW

Based in Dresden, Germany; Kern is a recent discovery of mine and I was really impressed with his liveset release on the Phonocake label. Things being as they are I asked him to provide a mix for the show. He’s a member of the collective Idealfun and alongside the Kern name has 2 other alias: dk69 and One Day in Metropia. His list of influences goes a little bit like this: Aphex Twin, Autechre, Hia, Drexciya, Datatheif, Nautilis, The Orb, FSOL, Squarepusher, DMX Krew, b12, Biosphere, Massive Attack, Aux88, Venetian Snares, Dynamix II, Warp, Planet Mu, Underground Resistance, and more.

[review] Sol_Dat - Speed Demon [Bass Gun Records]

Well well well. Fresh release from Paul Blackford and Smashback’s electro / UK bass label Bass Gun and up on production duties is Sol_Dat with a crew of remixers.

Sol_Dat - Speed Demon
Junglist electro with a kicking acid b-line With beats sounding like their from a drummer rather than a machine. The main drop takes it up a couple of notches and it powers it’s way out and about. Great stuff.

Sol_Dat - Speed Demon (DJ Cutlass Supreme Remix)
Jacking, stripped beats and a big rolling bassline gradually adding more electro elements. Krunky offerings with a head nodding melodic bassline. This track is just begging for a skanking filthy acapella.

Sol_Dat - Speed Demon (Mazzula Remix)
B-boy drums leading into a whobbed sub before the dark electro b-line comes rasping out. Great track this, with a fresh and peakfloor feel with the main section and breakdown. Consider me a fan of Mazzula.

Sol_Dat - Speed Demon (Teutonic Kaboom Remix)
Dark, glitched out fragile distortion encapsulates that bassline of the original with a fat wide extra bassline kicking it out on top. This remix has a feel of an old Jungle wobbler, or some breaky garage with that old skool 2nd bassline.

MANTIS 024 with TIBURCE PALMIER + the INVENTORS of AIRCRAFT / archive+podcast now up

DOWNLOAD / MIRROR / iTUNES / RSS

Right first, sorry for the delay in getting this up on the podcast. Real life got in the way.

To business: Up this week, not one, but two, yes two showcases. Almost polar opposite in style. Ambient lush sound vs bass rich neuro drumnbass electronica.

SHOWCASE 1st
Coming out of London we have the latest signing to the awesome net label Serein Records roster: The Inventors of Aircraft. Having recently released their first LP; Unknown Language, on Serein they really caught my attention. So much so I invited them to give us a production showcase of their sound. It’s going to be deep, textured and soothingly lush sound. Droney, organic and late at night really quite hypnotic.

SHOWCASE 2nd
In contrast to that we have France’s Tiburce Palmier. I closed a MANTIS a few shows back with one of his tracks and was blown away. So it follows, he’s on the show giving us our second production showcase for MANTIS this week. Citing influences such as SPOR, Godflesh, Front 242, Boards of Canada and Scorn you know we’re in for a real treat.

REST OF DA SHOW
Bleeps, drones, beats, clicks, bass and the usual hour presented by DVNT. Including some unreleased sclist, Monolake and forthcoming Gyu. You also heard the latest from Antiritmo and their new signing Dropout, some Minus from Troy Pierce and Plastikman, and the wicked Few Nolder remix of Esse’s The Beach.

As usual the archive MP3 is fully track ID’d.

[chart] DVNT and his September Darkfloor 15.

Here’s my September selection of sounds I’m currently finding pleasant on the ears. Apologies for the delay, real life got in the way.

DVNT and his September Darkfloor 15.

In no particular order.

01. Dropout - Bukkake [Antiritmo]
Driving, chunky, epic, just all round damn fine music. Can see this being in my sets for a while. Antiritmo may be a net label but the quality if up there, and every release is getting my attention. Dropout is a new name to me, but based on his 4 track EP with Antiritmo it’s a name I’ve got on my radar. And then there is the name of this track… ;)

02. Shinra - 1986 [WIDE]
This ain’t messing around. Full on electro vibes. Bags of energy, drum machines and phat arse bass. The whole release is a winner and this title track just pimps itself to the front of the pack. I defy you to listen to this and not start jumping around your seat.

03. Ion Driver - Elemental [Digital Distortions]
Dubbed out electro scatters of sound with a gated stuttered vox rising in the lower levels. Glitches, edits and scratches and even rewinds perpetuate around the deep wall of aural delight. Just awesome.

04. Tadox - Dancing Queen [Armatura Records]
Sounds like Hawtin’s Orange/Yellow track of the mid 90s. After having a course of anabolic steroids. Dark, heavy, and jacking with awesome percussion and drum programming.

05. Molez - Dimensions [Digital Distortions]
Woah. Serious sound sculpture coming out of this hybrid electro, glitch, dubstep, bass rich behemoth of a track. Molez is a new name to ]Dd[ but after this, I can see a very bright future ahead. This is a producer in full control of their sound.

06. The Inventors of Aircraft - Unknown Language [Serein]
Recently showcased on the MANTIS radio show, the Inventors of Aircraft really blew me away when they released their debut LP on one of my favourite ambient labels; Serein. Beautifully crafted lushful droney tones of aural pleasure. This is deep headspace music.

07. Teemu T - Process [Biomechanics]
Dub techno that just rolls, and then some.

08. Chase & Status - Eastern Jam [Ram Records]
If you don’t know this tune by name you’ll for sure have heard it. The huge hype behind this dubstep track, and of course the usual high standard of production from the Drum n Bass producers Chase & Status has helped to make this an anthem. Pure and simple. This is just screaming to be ramped up to 11 on the bassbins.

09. Grovskopa - Sun In You [Emergence Records]
Ambient waves of sound and vox sooth you into darkly tinged stripped down dubbed out techno.

10. Caper - Hybrid [Studio Rockers]
And so continues the damn fine releases on the Botchit & Scraper offshoot; Studio Rockers. Caper is I believe one half of the wobbletastic Jellybass crew and this is some next level dubstep/electronica. Bold bass and some really thoughtout development in the track makes this a must pack tune.

11. Esse - The Beach (Few Nolder Remix) [Knobs]
Solid deep techno. Driving and designed to get lost in. The breakdown is just an awesome thing in itself. The beats slowly build up, doubling up it sounds like, it seems to stutter and prepare itself for the drop which is rolls out of into the awaiting sea of jacking beats and warm bass.

12. Gyu - Mettle [Urban Scrumping]
MANTIS favourite, Gyu (one half of the production duo Mad-Tek) hits out with a new EP on Urban Scrumping. Breakstep, electrodubstep, electro breaks. Call it what you will. This is a sound that Gyu and Mad-Tek are fast owning and making all their own. Mettle is just, by the skinny latte hair on my chinny chin chin my fave track. But the whole EP is likely to get ravanged.

13. Speedy J - Planetary Departure (Speedy J Bootlegggg) [dub]
Fuck me. Seriously phat bass lead techno with it’s one clear aim of destroying darkfloors everywhere. You can take it as a given that this will be in most sets you hear from me in a long time. It builds and strips back before hitting back on the rich driving bass.

14. Ebola - Bruxism [Acroplane]
It’s name couldn’t sum up better what this track is. Heavy and it means business. Cleverly put together mean and evil sound.

15. Innasekt - Static [Frijsfo Beats]
Huge. I love this. Bass that smacks you in the face, and then drop kicks you across the room. Darkfloor vibes ebbing out of every crevis. Part of a long awaited 4 tracker release with Chas & Dave, Yapsta and Lewis Hunter taking the reins for the other tracks. This is sure to be a classic release with a range of styles coming under the ever growing expanse of the dubstep umbrella.

COMPETITION
Those that listened in live will already know what to do. But for those of you on the archives, just answer the 2 simple questions asked on the show and email in to me mantis@brap.fm with the subject heading COMPETITION.

Up for grabs is 2 pieces of shiny vinyl from the Afghan Headspin boys (Recent review). Closing date 22nd September 2008.

SHOWCASE
Coming up this week we have a bit of Techno Takeover courtesy of CONFOUNDED. In a similar style to MANTIS 022 with HENRY (MYUZYK) vs DVNT it’s a joint host kinda feel. CONFOUNDED are DVNT and Mr Seavers.

You should know all about me, DVNT, already. Mr Seavers was one of our first showcased artists back in 2007 on the 3rd show. He also came back and helped host the 4th show (with E.V.A.C.)

Mr Seavers cut his DJing teeth playing for Flatline at The Bomb in Nottingham. Slots at a variety of small clubs and bars in the area followed, both solo and as part of Breaks duo Max Hedroom, graduating to sets at seminal breaks night Spectrum, London-based Ffaction, and the near-legendary “Max Hedroom presents” nights in the last few days of The Bomb’s existence - mixing up Dubstep, Tough Electro and bowel-loosening Hard Techno to devastating effect with fellow cohorts Gareth Williams and Max Cooper.

Currently still enjoying a residency at Nottingham’s infamous long-standing Hard Techno night Pure Filth, playing alongside such names as DAVE the Drummer, Rowland the Bastard, Chris Liberator, Lief Ryan, Esther Ofei, Darc Marc, James Ruskin, Michael Forshaw, Julian Liberator and Mark Hawkins.

We first performed together as CONFOUNDED back in May in London and shall be a multi deck Techno Takeover, whilst dipping our fingers into the MANTIS spec, darkfloor electronica range.

An apology for the sound quality of some of the tunes. The setup we did for this show was using Traktor Scratch (as well as traditional vinyl), but it seemed not to respond very well to our CD deck. This is now all sorted for future shows.

Easy now. Hope you’ve recovered from the hard as battering that the Concrete DJz gave us last time on MANTIS 021. Coming up this week we have something a little different. Live from MANTIS HQ, we welcome Henry, good friend, Myuzyk.net label owner and all round musical muse.

SHOWCASE
Henry became obsessed with music from a young age as a listener and developed a taste for electro and hip hop in the mid 80s and in the early 90s was all about acid, techno and indie. With the mid 90s began his love affair with electronica and what was then described as trip hop.

Around 1998 he met a new group of friends having moved to a different town, they were still throwing not quite legal parties and had been since the CJB days … He got involved gradually and was part of an alliance known as skinchimney which went on to host parties and club nights around North Kent.

Eventually the move from just being a music fan to becoming a DJ happened and the 1210s became the new toy.

Playing a mixture of downtempo and electro tinged breakbeat at a night he hosted with a friend which saw some full tilt partying and guests such as SOTEG, Stormfield, Distance, Steelzawheelz and many more.

Over the years there have been many aliases and projects including cottage industry labels with mates which sowed the seed for Virus B-23 (a sterling label that is sadly missed. Helped launch the career of a certain dubstep heavyweight - Markomen and accolade from fellow bass heavyweight Tayo)

When the time came to move on from this small but much loved label he decided to go it alone and founded an internet based outlet called myuzyk (fast becoming one of THE net labels, every release is frankly, awesome).

Since MANTIS‘ inception on Brap FM’s airwaves we’ve been pushing the myuzyk sound and releases and shall continue to do so as long as the excellent music keeps flowing. So I’ve temped Henry out of deepest darkest Kent into South London and get him round the MANTIS HQ.

Rather than the usual showcase, we did a kinda back to back session. Each playing stuff pushing all the right buttons at the moment. As is the norm with MANTIS, the range of sounds is all over shop, but the textures and tastes are of a deep musicalness, a clear sigh of artists and producers who are masters of their craft.

Thanks for listening. Please get in contact with your comments, suggestions and feelings to the show and tracks.
